Meet Heather Johnson

BIO Girls Volunteer in Grand Forks, ND

For this volunteer, BIO Girls is the perfect fit aligning her various passions into one program.

Going on five years as a dedicated BIO Girls volunteer in the Grand Forks community, Heather Johnson is grateful to be able to provide valuable life-lessons to girls in her community.

“I graduated with a Masters in Elementary Education and taught public school (3rd grade) for 8 years before resigning to be at home to raise my girls and to pursue being a virtual health and wellness coach. I also have a heart for God’s word and what He promises us which is also part of BIO Girls. I love physical fitness and the life lessons that it teaches along with the mentorship BIO Girls provides to young girls.”

As for her favorite lesson, Heather really enjoys the teachings on social media and comparison. As she puts it, these lessons serve as a powerful reminder that God made no mistakes on each of us.

“Girls are using social media younger and younger. I want them to realize that it is truly a trap and a thief of joy when they get distracted by what others are achieving, accomplishing or looking like.”

As for impact in action, Heather has seen countless instances of positive effects from the BIO Girls program through the girls she’s served.

“Girls want to be seen, heard, and know they are enough without having to prove themselves. I can think of a few girls in particular that I positively impacted after hearing about the bullying they experienced at school and even at home and reminded them of God’s grace and acceptance! I taught them how to respond, communicate, and act and they kept me updated weekly.”

For Heather, the impact hits closer to home too - with her own two daughters who went through the program as participants and served as volunteer Junior Mentors as they aged out of our Youth program.

Both of Heather’s daughters are now teenagers, loving cross country at track. Heather gives credit to the BIO Girls program in helping not only grow their interest in running, but also their self-esteem and confidence.

To sum up her experience with our program - grateful.

“Volunteering for an organization like BIO Girls makes you feel like you have more purpose and are a light for young girls! I also am surprised every year when we are going through the lessons or modules because it’s also exactly what I need to hear or be reminded of.”

Heather! You are a true light for the girls you’ve served in the Grand Forks community.

We’re so grateful for your leadership and the love you’ve poured into our program.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
