Meet Amelia
BIO Girls Jr Mentor - Hope North
When a Site Director emails us to tell us how wonderful one of their mentors and junior mentors are, we have to ask some questions! We were honored to get to know Jr Mentor, Amelia, and share her experience with you.
How long have you been in BIO Girls?
5 years
What are some lessons you feel have impacted you as you are growing up?
Learning to persevere and to go at my own pace when I need to.
Why did you want to be a junior mentor?
I want to help others, and I love running.
Why do you think it's important for girls to be in BIO Girls?
BIO Girls is a really great resource for emotional intelligence (both for your own emotions and for others’), and I also think it’s great to get outside and be active, especially nowadays with the rise of social media.
And some words from Steph…
The amount of growth and resiliency I’ve seen develop in Amelia through her time in BIO Girls has been awesome. She’s grown from a reluctant 7 year old that I had to cajole and bribe to do workouts to an accomplished cross country team member at Fargo North! She has a spirit of adventure and the confidence to try new things—last year she joined the JV soccer team and hadn’t played soccer since she was 5 years old. It was difficult, but she stuck with it and had a positive attitude. She is able to audition for theater and music performances without fear and tackles her nerves head-on. She’s had a few television interviews to promote health care for kids, and handled the spotlight very well without insecurity. I think BIO Girls has played a big role in her ability to try hard things, and to handle it gracefully when it doesn’t go as well as she hopes. She has a tremendous sense of self and purpose, is a great friend and has a heart to serve others. It has been a joy to mentor with her at the Hope North site this year.
How can someone become a Junior Mentor?
Junior Mentors may or may not have already been a participant in a BIO Girls program. Being a past participant is not a requirement! Anyone can apply at any time for a junior mentor role at a program near them. Junior Mentors are those who are looking to develop their leadership skills and be a positive role model to others.
