Small and mighty: Redfield, South Dakota

Come with us as we journey 210 miles away from Fargo to one of our program locations in Redfield, South Dakota, with a population of approximately 2,200. Redfield has been home to a BIO Girls program for three years, touching the lives of over 100 girls. One of only three BIO Girls programs in South Dakota (so far!) these program volunteers commit to encouraging girls in their community to help create a big impact.

Most of their volunteer mentors have been there since the beginning. These volunteers include 3-year-mentor, Joelle Schuknect, who is also a trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Or you can find mentors, Jessie Ford and Felicia Ethridge, also spending their time as new members of the local Lions Club. Plus countless others who are making a difference in various ways.

What truly sets Redfield apart is the strong sense of encouragement and community these women are building with the next generation. Some of them have daughters in the program. Some of them don’t. All of them work towards building positive and uplifting relationships. Why? Because they know it matters today and for the future.

Programs in towns like Redfield are also strengthened by incredible local support. Businesses such as Appel’s Oil/Quick Stop and Back 2 the Rack Consignment recognize the importance of investing in the youth of their community and generously support this work.

The 2026 season in Redfield will be led by Site Director Cami Houghtaling and Marketing Lead Shyanne Lopez, both of whom bring tremendous passion and heart to the program. BIO Girls programs simply would not exist without volunteers like these who come together to make a lasting impact, one girl at a time.

Thank you to everyone who helps make a BIO Girls program in Redfield possible!

Wondering how you can bring a BIO Girls program to your community? We’d love to connect and share with you how you can make an impact like this too.
