Every Girl Deserves to Feel Seen
Caitlyn Roemmich volunteers for not one but two BIO Girls programs in her area. As the Marketing Lead in Fessenden, North Dakota and as the Site Director in Harvey, North Dakota, Caitlyn has been a part of seven total programs in the last four years, impacting over 100 girls!
Let’s meet Caitlyn!
“As a mom of two young girls, BIO Girls has a very personal meaning to me. I want my daughters to grow up knowing their worth, believing in themselves, building healthy relationships, and understanding that they are beautiful inside and out.
Through my profession in public health, I also see the growing need for programs like BIO Girls in our communities. Helping young girls develop confidence, resilience, empathy, and healthy coping skills at an early age can have a lasting impact on their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Being involved with BIO Girls allows me to combine two things I care deeply about: supporting the health and well-being of our community and investing in the next generation of young women. I truly believe in the mission of this program and feel honored to play a small role in helping girls discover their strength, confidence, and potential.”
Why do you volunteer with BIO Girls?
“I volunteer for BIO Girls because I truly believe in its mission of helping girls discover that they are beautiful inside and out.
I often find myself wishing a program like this had been available when I was growing up. Having positive role models, learning self-confidence, building healthy friendships, and understanding your true worth are lessons that can shape a lifetime.
As a mom, I want my own girls to have those opportunities. I want them to grow up knowing they are enough, just as they are, and to have the tools to navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience.
I also want that same opportunity for every girl in our community. Every girl deserves to feel seen, valued, and empowered to become the best version of herself.
Most importantly, I volunteer because I hope to be a positive role model. If I can encourage even one girl to believe in herself, be kind to others, or realize her own potential, then every moment I spend volunteering is worth it. Watching these girls grow in confidence, kindness, and courage is one of the greatest rewards, and I am honored to be a small part of their journey.”
What is your favorite service project?
“It's hard to choose just one because each project teaches our girls a different lesson about serving others and taking pride in their community.
In Fessenden, we spend time cleaning up the streets by picking up litter. This project gives the girls a sense of ownership and pride in their town while teaching them the importance of caring for the place they call home. They see firsthand that even small acts of service can make a big difference.
In Harvey, one of my favorite traditions is our annual cleaning day at the church where we hold our BIO Girls sessions. The church generously allows us to use its facility at no cost, and this is our way of expressing gratitude and giving back. It teaches the girls that kindness should be met with appreciation and that serving those who support us strengthens our community.
Another favorite is writing positive and encouraging messages with sidewalk chalk at a local park. It's a simple activity, but seeing the girls excited to spread kindness and brighten someone else's day is incredibly rewarding. You never know who may need those uplifting words, and it's a wonderful reminder that even the smallest gestures can have a meaningful impact.”
What is your favorite lesson/mantra?
“My favorite lesson and mantra this year was Session 5 Mantra: Step Inside Their Story
This lesson focused on empathy and encouraged the girls to pause before reacting and consider what someone else might be thinking or feeling. It reminded them that everyone has a story we may not know, and that kindness and understanding can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
I love this lesson because empathy is one of the most important qualities we can teach young people. When girls learn to see situations from another person's perspective, they become more compassionate friends, classmates, teammates, and future leaders. They learn that choosing kindness over judgment can positively impact those around them.
I believe this mantra extends far beyond our BIO Girls sessions. It's a lesson the girls can carry with them throughout their lives, helping them build stronger relationships, navigate conflicts with compassion, and create more caring communities. In today's world, taking a moment to "step inside someone else's story" is a powerful reminder that everyone deserves understanding, grace, and kindness.”
Do you have an impactful story to share about the program?
“One of the most impactful things I've witnessed this year has been the incredible connection between one of our mentors and two participants. These girls come from challenging home environments, and each week they eagerly look forward to seeing their mentor. They've built such a trusting relationship that they excitedly share their drawings, writing, stories, and experiences with her. It's clear that BIO Girls has become a safe, positive place where they feel seen, heard, and valued.
Both of the girls' mothers have shared how much the program has meant to their daughters. One mother told us that her daughter typically doesn't stick with activities, but she absolutely loves coming to BIO Girls every week. Hearing that was a powerful reminder of the difference a caring mentor and a supportive environment can make.
One of my favorite memories happened at a community event where one of the participants was recognized for a speech she had written. As she stood on stage, she immediately spotted her BIO Girls mentor in the audience. After finishing her speech, she walked straight off the stage and gave her mentor a big hug. It was such a genuine moment that perfectly captured the bond they had formed.
Moments like these remind me that BIO Girls is about so much more than the weekly lessons. It's about building relationships, creating a sense of belonging, and showing girls that there are caring adults who believe in them. Sometimes the greatest impact comes from simply being present, listening, and encouraging a child to believe in themselves.”
Anything else you’d like to share about the program?
“One of the things I've come to appreciate most about volunteering with BIO Girls is that the experience doesn't just impact the participants it impacts the mentors, too. While we volunteer to encourage and support the girls, I find that each session is also a reminder for me to be a kinder, more compassionate, and more intentional person.
The lessons on empathy, confidence, gratitude, resilience, and kindness are just as meaningful for adults as they are for the girls. BIO Girls has reminded me that we never outgrow the need to practice these values in our everyday lives. It has challenged me to be a better role model, a better listener, and a more encouraging person both within the program and in my community.
Volunteering with BIO Girls is truly a gift. While we hope to make a positive difference in the lives of the participants, they often end up making just as great an impact on us. I am grateful to be part of a program that helps girls grow into confident, compassionate young women while also inspiring the adults who walk alongside them.”
