BIO Girls Volunteer in Fergus Falls, MN

With 5 years of dedicated service to the BIO Girls mission, Colleen has made quite the impact on her community of Fergus Falls through mentorship of our adolescent girls.

As a mom to teenage boys, Colleen describes her volunteer experience as a heartwarming gift getting to hang out with a smiling and energetic young group of girls!

When it comes to her ‘why’, it’s simple.

“The BIO Girls program builds resilience in our girls through developing individual coping strategies, connection to caring and competent adults, and a sense of belonging to a community.”

As a mentor who was involved in the pilot phase of the program in Fergus Falls and returning years later, she’s been amazed at the growth of the program and strategies implemented to ensure safety, support and organization of each site. More importantly, she’s in awe of the number of individuals and communities that have positively benefited from BIO Girls.

As for a favorite lesson, her most cherished topics are geared towards self-acceptance and self-worth.

“This is such an important lesson for our kiddos (and ourselves) that no matter how we compare ourselves to others, we are made exactly how we are supposed to be. We have a place in this world, no matter what we or others tell us.”

When reflecting back on the years and countless memories, there’s one moment in particular that will always hold a place in her heart. After working through (and enjoying!!) a season with a chatty bunch of gals, a mom shared with Colleen how safe and accepted her child felt at BIO Girls. Her child, who was typically very quiet and reserved blossomed into herself right alongside the rest of the small group.

A true testament of BIO Girls in action!!

Thank you, Colleen, for the love, energy and passion you’ve poured into our program. The community of Fergus Falls is a better place because of YOU.

Grateful, grateful, grateful!!!
